This is a piece about my grandmother’s life and death and my experience processing losing her during my last semester in college, which ended with the solitude of pandemic. It is a chain of women's voices and memories across distance.

"Afghan Girl"

I wrote this piece for a course, Photographs and Storytelling, at the University of Pennsylvania. It is about Sharbat Gula. She is the woman (then girl) in Mr. Steve McCurry’s famous photograph, Afghan Girl, which graced the cover of National Geographic in the 1980s. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. McCurry himself to inform my writing about this piece.
